Elegant and simple, these Black and White Cookies combine soft, cake-like texture with the iconic two-tone icing for a delicious treat.

INGREDIENTS

FOR THE COOKIES: – 1/2 cup (113g) unsalted butter – 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar – 1 large egg – 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract – 1/3 cup (75g) sour cream – 2 cups (240g) all-purpose flour – 1/2 teaspoon baking powder – 1/4 teaspoon baking soda – 1/4 teaspoon salt FOR THE ICING: – 3 cups (330g) confectioners’ sugar – 1/4 cup (59ml) whole milk – 2 tablespoons light corn syrup – 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract – 1/2 teaspoon salt – 3 tablespoons (15g) dark cocoa powder

Making cookies: Heat the oven to 350°F. Use silicone mats or parchment paper to line baking sheets.

Step 1 

INSTRUCTIONS

Beat butter and sugar with a whisk attachment in an electric mixer until light and airy. Mix in the egg, vanilla, and sour cream.

Step 2

Mix in the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until combined.

Step 3

Split the dough into 12 equal portions and place them on the prepared baking sheet, leaving at least 2 inches between each cookie for spreading.

Step 4

Bake the cookies for 15 minutes until the edges are lightly browned. Remove from oven and place on wire rack. 

Step 5

Flip or press warm cookies with a glass to flatten. Let cookies cool completely before icing.

Step 6

HOW TO ICE AND ASSEMBLE: Whisk confectioners' sugar, milk, corn syrup, vanilla and salt until smooth. Split the icing into two bowls. Add cocoa powder to one portion and mix.

Step 7

Pipe vanilla icing over half of each cookie after they cool to room temperature. Let the icing set by freezing the cookies for a few minutes.

Step 8

Next, ice the other half of each cookie with chocolate. Let icing set before serving.
